For my practicum placement for the Behavioural Interventions Advanced Diploma program through Nova Scotia Community College, I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to use my skills and share my knowledge at BRAVE. They are a great team to work a long side, who are open to new ideas and have a wealth of knowledge on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. I have learned a great deal having only been with them for a month. I created lesson plans for child care as well as for the girls in individual befriending. I was able to observe program implementation, data collection, and attend clinical meetings. I also learned the amount of work goes into these programs behind the scenes including, creating family files, intact assessments, program preparation, research, meetings and many phone calls. I have learned so much about working with families and the importance of creating positive behaviour changes for these families.
I have learned that children learn through modeling and how important it is for them to have a positive role model in their lives. I enjoyed how BRAVE follows an ecological model and does programming with the child and parent, as well as focuses on skills in the home, at school and in the community. It is so important for the SNAP® skills to generalize in all aspects of their life so they can effectively use these coping skills when dealing with bullying, aggression, and various social situations.
I would like to formally thank the staff at BRAVE for giving me this opportunity and always making me feel welcome at the Centre. I highly recommend if anyone has the opportunity to work alongside the staff at BRAVE to take the opportunity, you will learn a great deal and have a lot of fun doing it.
